This high-profile tank has been a project 20 years in the making. Choosing to move forward when the economic conditions felt most advantageous, K. Hovnanian Homes has long had their vision set on bringing our Pedesphere-style tank to fruition. Today, Caldwell’s tank soars prominently above Kent Island, right in the middle of Chesapeake Bay.
Over the years, we’ve shared many discussions, thoughtfully choosing what the best height would be for this tank. K. Hovnanian Homes needed a tank able to accommodate significant water pressure; something that could withstand the requirements of the new housing development planned for construction.
Visible from the heavily traveled Chesapeake Bay Bridge, this 500,000 gallon single pedestal tank now serves the new housing development on the north side of the island. Caldwell added logos that prominently feature the Maryland crab, highlighting the arena’s world-renowned claim to fame, along with the Kent Island logo, capturing the island’s four seasons. The tank consists of over 156 tons of steel in addition to nearly 26,500 square feet of painted steel surface. Caldwell also included a hydrodynamic mixing system to improve K. Hovnanian Homes’ water quality and a cathodic protection system to help control corrosion of the submerged surfaces inside the tank. Together with a high-end coating system and use of cathodic protection, we created this tank to serve as a key steel structure on the island for years to come.
